Changes to the .ie Domain Name Requirements are coming!

Did you know that the rules for registering a ‘.ie’ domain name are set to change?

From the 21st of March 2018 you will no longer need to explain why you want a particular .ie domain name.  This part of the .ie domain name requirements process was called a “claim to the name”.

As it currently stands, to register a .ie domain name, an individual or business must prove that they have a valid claim to the desired .ie domain name, plus a real, tangible connection to the island of Ireland.

According to the IEDR (the registry for .ie internet domain names), this new policy procedure will make it easier and faster for businesses and individuals to register a .ie domain name.  Its aim is to also make the .ie domain name space more accessible to individuals, clubs and communities.

So what does this mean?

Essentially, this change will make any .ie domain available on a first come first served basis, as long the applicant can prove a tangible connection to Ireland.

As such, the IEDR are advising anyone who has not yet registered a .ie domain for their business, club or community websites to do so before a potential competitor takes the name.

Most importantly though, this change also means the proof of connection to Ireland will only need to be done for the first .ie registration.  Once you have registered a .ie domain name you will be able to register as many other .ie domain names as you want without the need to provide any additional information.

If you wish to take action to secure your .ie domain, then head on over to the IEDR website and follow the necessary steps.

If you don’t have the time, then get in touch with us here at Eclipse and we can help you through the process.
